Since the end of March, wine importer Elliot Awin has been running casual wine tastings from his living room over Instagram Live. Viewers are able to buy three bottles of wine from independent retailers prior to the evening to taste-a-long and listen to Elliot chat about the wines, the grape varieties, regions and people involved.
On the 1st May, his tasting focussed on Rosé and how Summer in the UK is more a state of mind than a season. “If summer was a wine, it would almost certainly be Rosé!” he says. Elliot has suggested a few for us to try.
VILLA WOLF PINOT NOIR ROSÉ, PFALZ, GERMANY
More commonly known for light coloured red wines, Pinot Noir is a perfect variety to make rosé. Fresh and zippy, with bright red cherry and white peach. At 11.5% alcohol, this lighter option is perfect for serious summer salads, or an all-day garden party!
QUINTA DO PORTAL ROSÉ, DOURO, PORTUGAL
MAS DE CADENET, CÔTES DE PROVENCE SAINTE-VICTOIRE, FRANCE
The sub region of Provence known as Sainte-Victoire is famed for its super textural, seductively fresh wines with a delicate freeze-dried red fruit character. Mas de Cadenet, now run by the 7th generation of the Negrel family produces wines that fit this description perfectly. Made from fruit grown organically, sustainability is paramount; the result is a perfectly balanced, superb summer-in-a-glass crisp rosé.
