Keeping a London design icon alive, discover the story behind our brand new Collectible Phone Box Clutch.
Do you remember them? The iconic red London phone box is a piece of nostalgic British design history that Lulu was keen to immortalise into a handbag. Introducing the Lulu Calling clutch! “I just loved the old London phone boxes”, says Lulu. “They were so bright and cheerful and an iconic part London’s street life. I miss them!”
The design for the bag is based on the ‘K2’ phone booth model thanks to its minimalist design and proportions. The challenge is to create a playful, gorgeous-looking clutch but with dimensions that provide enough capacity to fit modern day necessities: aka large mobile phones (the irony!).
Crafted from recycled satin and embellished with embroidery and cotton twill appliqué panels, the design features our L.G. monogram graced with a platinum crown, embroidered in a platinum tone metallic thread. It’s all in the detailing, of course. Note the pigeons on the roof, the witty quote inside the lid, and the cute embroidery on the back of the mirror that’s included in the bag.
Lulu Calling Phone Box Charm – like the bag, but miniature! Fun fact: Lulu came up with idea for the bag’s name – an adaptation of The Clash’s 1979 cult album and song ‘London Calling’, with a Lulu twist. Lulu liked the bag so much she decided it simply had to become a Collectible.
